GRINNELL, Iowa – One night after winning its first-ever game against Buena Vista University, the Grinnell College women's basketball team ran into a tough matchup against once-beaten Iowa Wesleyan University.
The Tigers got out to a 12-4 first-period lead and then used a 23-12 second-period run to pull away for a 78-38 victory at Darby Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Grinnell (3-4) had a tough night shooting, hitting just 24.5 percent of its field goal tries.
Eva Carchidi '24 matched her career-high with nine points, including a 2-of-3 performance from 3-point land, while
Elena Friedman '24 scored a career-best six points while hitting 2-of-4 treys.
Nicole Ware '25 also had six points.
Payton Hall '25 came up with four rebounds and also had a block. Others with blocks were
Aidan Coalson '22 and
Sarah Toay '23. Coalson's block gave her 33 for her career, 17
th-best in program history.
Neither team scored for the first 3-1/2 minutes, but then Iowa Wesleyan (6-1) picked up the pace and went up 12-2 before settling for an eight-point lead by the end of the first frame.
The visitors continued to up their lead in the second period and held scoring edges in each of the last two periods, as well.
Grinnell will be at home again Sunday when Waldorf College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
