Grinnell sees early lead slip away in men's basketball loss at Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team built a 13-point first-half lead, but fell victim to a big rally by Knox College as the hosts eked out an 84-80 victory Tuesday.

Grinnell (4-4, 0-2 Midwest Conference) got 20 points from Patrick Simms '22, 15 from Adam Phillips '23, 14 from Will Bebee '22 and 11 from David Bluder '25.

Simms and Bebee each added six rebounds, while Simms also had nine assists and four steals. Dean Mazlish '23 had a career-high two steals and Bebee two blocks.

Grinnell led virtually the entire first half, building a 44-31 lead on Bebee's 3-pointer with 1:28 to go.

Knox (3-2, 1-0 MWC) closed within 44-35 by halftime and scored the first 11 points of the second half to go up by two.

The teams went back and forth after that, but Grinnell gradually inched ahead to take a 66-59 lead on Bebee's layup with 8:34 remaining. Again Knox rallied to go ahead. The Pioneers made a few charges and closed within one at 79-78 on Bluder's trey with 1:41 remaining, but Knox hit its free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

The Pioneers return to Darby Gymnasium Saturday to take on Lawrence University. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
