Grinnell men's basketball team jumps back into action against Coe

GRINNELL, Iowa - Though the result could have been a bit better, in the end the Grinnell College men's basketball team was just happy to be back in action at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers, who missed all of last season due to CoVID, opened their 2021-22 campaign Friday night against a solid Coe College squad. The Kohawks got out to a quick lead on their way to a 117-82 victory.

Grinnell featured a one-two scoring punch of Aiden Gilbert '23 and Patrick Simms '22, who scored 23 and 22 points, respectively. Dillon Gestring '25 added 13 points and Morgan Walser '22 had 10. Simms also had five steals and three assists.

The rebounding front was led by big men Will Bebee '22 and Tommy Smith '22, who each had six boards. Bebee also blocked three shots, pushing his career total to 103 which ranks sixth all-time at Grinnell.

A rough shooting night hurt the Pioneers, as they hit just 26.4 percent of their field goal tries and 19.1 percent from 3-point land.

Coe took advantage, shooting out to a 34-9 lead on its way to being ahead 59-39 by halftime.

Grinnell returns to action Sunday with a contest at Westminster College. Action in Fulton, Mo., tips off at 4 p.m.
