GALESBURG, Ill. – Grinnell College saw its record-breaking men's soccer season draw to a close Friday with a 3-1 setback to Cornell College in the opening round of the Midwest Conference Tournament.
It was a case of stats not matching the outcome, as Grinnell nearly doubled Cornell's shots total. Leading Grinnell's 13-shot attack were
Jasper Yang '22 with four and
Davis Provost '23,
Caleb Hoereth '24 and
Henry Cladouhos '22 with two apiece.
Cornell (15-3) got on the board in the second minute and added another goal less than a minute later for a 2-0 halftime edge. The Rams added a goal in the 58
th minute to take a 3-0 lead.
Grinnell (11-8) had scoring chances throughout the game, but Cornell's keeper made save after save while finishing with eight.
The Pioneers got a goal in the 89
th minute when
Zak Serby '25 got the ball on the left side of the field and sent a pass to
Noah Guyton '23 near the upper right side of the box. Guyton beat his defender, dribbled the ball near the middle of the box and flipped in a low liner into the net from 15 yards out. It was Guyton's second goal of the season and Serby's third assist.

As referenced earlier, it was a record-breaking season for Grinnell. School season records were set by Yang (54 points, eight game-winning goals and 53 shots on goal), game record by Yang (four assists), team season records (143 points, 45 assists and 157 shots on goal) and team game record (seven assists).
