Grinnell tabs Zack Hasenyager as new women's and men's tennis coach

GRINNELL, Iowa – Zack Hasenyager has been a model of success in tennis, and he's looking forward to bringing that trait to Grinnell College and its traditionally-strong programs.

Hasenyager, currently head men's tennis coach at the College of Wooster in Ohio, has been named the Pioneers' head women's and men's tennis coach following a nationwide search. He will finish the current season with the Fighting Scots as Andy Hamilton '85, Grinnell's Director of Athletics and Recreation and the school's former longtime tennis coach, directs the Pioneers this spring.

"Throughout the interview process, we were impressed with Zack's understanding of running a collegiate tennis program, the ability to help individual players develop and that he possessed core values that aligned with our department," said Hamilton. "Having a chance to bring in a faculty-coach who is on the rise professionally fits well with the vision we have for our tennis programs.  I am excited to have him at Grinnell."

Hasenyager, in his seventh year at Wooster, made his impact felt immediately in 2014-15 when he guided the Fighting Scots to a No. 25 finish in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region rankings. The 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year had his squad out to an 8-3 start last season before the campaign was halted due to COVID-19.

Hasenyager has coached All-NCAC first-team singles and doubles players, including the league's 2017 Player of the Year.

"I am thrilled to join Grinnell College as the head men's and women's tennis coach," said Hasenyager. "I want to thank Andy Hamilton and the entire search committee for this opportunity. Grinnell really impressed me right away and I'm honored to have been chosen to continue building on the strong traditions that have been established by both teams."

Prior to Wooster, Hasenyager served as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Redlands in California. While there, he coached NCAA All-Americans in both singles and doubles, as well as multiple All-SCIAC players. He was also largely responsible for bringing in the nation's No. 12 recruiting class in 2013.

Prior to coaching at Redlands, Hasenyager spent three years as a professional tennis instructor at the Bainbridge Athletic Club in Bainbridge Island, Wash., where he developed a program for high-level juniors, ran United States Tennis Association league clinics and taught the sport to all skill levels, among other duties.

Hasenyager was a doubles specialist as a player for Redlands while also contributing in singles during his junior and senior seasons. The Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Div. III Tournament every year (2005-08), and achieved final rankings of No. 5 (2005), No. 7 (2006), No. 17 (2007) and No. 12 (2008).

A standout in the classroom, Hasenyager earned Phi Beta Kappa honors, receiving a bachelor's degree from Redlands with a major in managerial studies and economics. A three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, he also completed a master's degree in business administration at Redlands.
