Grinnell men's tennis team gets season off to rousing start with 9-0 win

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's tennis team got its 2021 spring campaign off to a rousing start at home Saturday, blanking Monmouth College 9-0.
 
The Pioneers, who have won 156 consecutive matches against Midwest Conference foes and 97 straight in MWC play, rolled in doubles with victories by the duos of Bowen Mince '22-Leo Esztergomi '24 (8-3), Henry Bridgers '24-Ishaan Tibrewal '21 (8-5) and an 8-0 shutout by Jonah Gilmore '24-Simon Kennel '23.
 
Tibrewal and Paul Elghouayel '24 highlighted singles with wins of 6-0, 6-0 at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively. Mince won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, Esztergomi won 6-3, 6-2 at the second spot, Gilmore earned a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 3 and Bridgers was victorious 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.
 
With the loss, Monmouth fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the MWC South Division.
 
Grinnell heads to Jacksonville, Ill., on Sunday to take on Illinois College. Action begins at 2:30 p.m.
