Grinnell softball team gets offensive in 2nd game against Monmouth

GRINNELL, Iowa - After struggling to get their bats going in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Grinnell College softball team's offense erupted after that.

The Pioneers pounded out 10 hits in the second game against Monmouth College on their way to a 10-1, five-inning win. That helped ease the sting of a 2-1 loss in the opening game.

Grinnell, 6-4 in the Midwest Conference South Division and overall, was led in the nightcap by Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller's '24 three hits. Christin Hartman '24 and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 combined to throw a five-hitter.

Grinnell went to work in the second inning, as Lizzy Vermeulen '24 had an RBI single to center and DiGiacomo-Zahller's RBI single through the left side. The Pioneers added five more runs in the third. Amanda Ramirez '23 hit an RBI double down the left-field line and later stole home, DiGiacomo-Zahller plated two runs with a single through the left side and another run crossed on an error.

The Pioneers added more in the fourth. Kami Anson '24 knocked in a run on a groundout, Mary Webb '23 lifted a sacrifice fly to right an another run scored on an error.

The Fighting Scots, 3-7 in the MWC South and 4-16 in all games, got their lone run in the fifth inning.

In the opener, Monmouth pitcher Abigail Leber limited the Pioneers to three hits. The Fighting Scots got the only runs they needed in the third inning. Grinnell's only run came when Webb knocked in a runner on a groundout in the seventh.

The same two teams battle Thursday in Monmouth, starting at 3 p.m.
