Pioneer softball team responds with sweep in must-win games against Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Facing a must-win scenario to remain in contention in the Midwest Conference South Division, the Grinnell College softball team responded perfectly.

The Pioneers swept Cornell College 8-1 and 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex to improve to 8-4 in both the South Division and overall. That sets up a huge showdown next Saturday when division leader Illinois College visits Grinnell for a twin bill.

Christin Hartman '24 picked up both pitching wins on the day, including a complete-game, 95-pitch, three-strikeout performance in the opener. She came on in relief in the second game, pitching 3-1/3 innings of hitless ball.

A seven-run outburst in the sixth inning of the opener broke a 1-all tie. Grinnell had 11 hits in the affair, including two apiece by Alexa Okada '24, Taylor Durak '24, Samantha Chu '24, Lizzy Vermeulen '24 and Amanda Ramirez '24.

Each team scored a run in the first inning, with Grinnell's coming on Vermeulen's RBI single up the middle. Okada broke the tie in the sixth with a two-run triple down the left-field line. Durak added an infield RBI single, Vermeulen plated a run with a single to left, Kami Anson '24 drew a bases-loaded walk and Ramirez knocked in two runs with an infield single.

Chu, Vermeulen and Ramirez each had two hits in the second game, which was tied 2-all through two innings. Vermeulen's RBI double to left in the first and an error in the second gave Grinnell its runs.

Cornell, 6-6 in the division and 11-7 in all games, broke the tie with a run in the third. The score remained 3-2 until the sixth when Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 hit a sacrifice fly to center and Okada walked with the bases loaded.

Grinnell hung on from there for the win. Both Hartman and starting pitcher Kathryn Vermeulen '24 struck out two for the winners.

The doubleheader with Illinois College next Saturday begins at 1 p.m.
