Grinnell softball team nearly trips up division champ Illinois College

GRINNELL, Iowa - Getting a win against Midwest Conference South Division champion Illinois College has proved a tough road for league foes in 2021.

The Grinnell College softball team nearly did just that, though, leading the Lady Blues 5-2 through five innings of Monday's second game before the visitors rallied for an 8-5 victory at the Softball Complex.

Illinois College (23-11, 13-1 MWC South) wrapped up the division crown in the opener with a 9-2 victory in a game that had been suspended due to rain Saturday.

Grinnell (8-6, 8-6 MWC South) rode a nine-hit attack in the second game, paced by two-hit performances by Samantha Chu '24, Amanda Ramirez '23 and Kami Anson '24. Ramirez also portrayed some nifty glove work at shortstop during the day's action, coming up with a few plays worthy of an ESPN highlight reel.

Ramirez got Grinnell off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game with an RBI single to left. Illinois College tied it in the second, but Ramirez hit an RBI single to center in the third to push the Pioneers ahead 2-1.

After the Lady Blues tied it in the top of the fourth, Grinnell erupted for three runs in the bottom of the frame. Alexa Okada '24 had an RBI single up the middle, Anson scored on a wild pitch and Taylor Durak '24 lifted an RBI single to left.

But then the Lady Blues stormed back, erupting for six runs in the sixth and hanging on from there for the win.

Grinnell trailed the first game 9-1 in the top of the fifth Saturday when rain halted the action. The Pioneers got their run in the third inning on Durak's RBI single up the middle, but the Lady Blues scored eight runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

When play resumed Monday, the Pioneers kept things going in the bottom of the fifth on Anson's RBI infield single. But that was it for the scoring as Illinois College earned the win.

Grinnell closes out its season Tuesday at Monmouth College. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
