ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Grinnell College's men's tennis team gutted its way out to a 2-1 lead through doubles play in its NCAA Division III Tournament opener Friday, but the Pioneers couldn't sustain the momentum as Augustana College of Illinois posted a 5-3 victory.

A milestone on the day came from Ishaan Tibrewal '21, who set the Grinnell school record for career singles winning percentage of .895. He was the Pioneers' lone singles winner Friday, posting a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the sixth spot to improve to 51-6 in his career.

Grinnell lost the first doubles match to be finished, but came back with an 8-4 win by the duo of Bowen Mince '22 and Leo Esztergomi '24 at the top spot and 8-7 (7-5) win at No. 2 by Michael Conlin-Brandenburg '21 and Jonah Gilmore '24.

The Vikings caught fire after that and secured the win with victories at four singles slots.

Augustana advances with a 13-6 mark and will meet the host school, Washington University, on Saturday. The Pioneers, who advanced to the NCAAs by claiming their 17th Midwest Conference title in a row, finished at 9-1.

Besides Tibrewal's school record, Conlin-Brandenburg finished his career with a .797 winning percentage in singles. That ranks 11th in program history. Conlin-Brandenburg and Tibrewal also rank third and fifth in program history, respectively, for career doubles winning percentage at .825 and .796.

Both finished with 51 career singles wins, which is 23rd in Grinnell history. Conlin-Brandenburg's 66 doubles wins are 16 all-time at Grinnell.
