Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Late rally sends MSOE past Grinnell men's soccer squad

WHEATON, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team used a late first-half rally to take command against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the Wheaton College Bob Baptista Invitational Saturday.

The Pioneers appeared poised to hang on for the 2-1 win, but MSOE scored in the 85th minute and then seven minutes into overtime for a 3-2 win.

MSOE (2-2) scored just 10 minutes into the game but Grinnell responded with two bang-bang goals, as Oliver Northing '25 found the back of the net in the 33rd minute and Jasper Yang '22 added a goal in the 34th minute. That pushed Yang's career goal total to 32, moving him to fourth in Pioneer history into a tie with Andrew Stephenson.

Northing's goal couldn't have been more perfect, as Yang advanced the ball on the left side and sent it into the middle of the box. A MSOE player got a foot on it and it ricocheted in front of the box, where Northing found it 30 yards out, lifted it with his right foot and into the upper left side of the net over the keeper's outstretched hands.

Not to be outdone, Yang scored a minute later. Ray Goedeker '22 gained possession of the ball on the upper right side of the box and made a move inside, sending a pass into the box. All in one movement, Yang rushed in front of the goal, touched the ball and flipped it on the ground into the left side of the net.

That lead held until the late going when MSOE rallied.

Grinnell (2-2) managed 13 shots, with three coming from Northing and two from Yang, Sam Naik '22 and Davis Provost '23.

Keeper Caleb Benson '24 made six saves while working an entire game for Grinnell.

The Pioneers host the University of Dubuque Tuesday at Springer Field. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
