Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Overtime heroics propel Grinnell men's soccer team to first win against Dubuque since 2008

GRINNELL, Iowa - A little bit of overtime went a long way for the Grinnell College men's soccer team in a big win over a regionally-ranked squad Tuesday afternoon.

Jasper Yang '22 scored three minutes into overtime on Ray Goedeker's '22 assist as the Pioneers took down the University of Dubuque 1-0, snapping a nine-game winless streak against the Spartans dating back to 2008. That string included eight losses and one tie.

Carter Benson '24 had another superb game at goal for Grinnell (3-2), keeping Dubuque's nine-shot first-half attack off its heels and continuing that performance into the last half of the game. He finished with 11 saves.

After the teams battled to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes, they took to it in overtime. Three minutes in, Grinnell got possession in its attacking half of the field.

Goedeker eventually controlled the ball in the right corner, worked near the end line and beat his defender with some fancy footwork. He dribbled to the side of the box and delivered it to the near post, where Yang perfectly read the pass. With one swift tap of his foot he faked out the keeper with a shot to the far post, sending the Pioneers and their fans into celebration.

Dubuque (2-2-1), ranked 10th regionally, won the shots battle 14-8. Yang had four of Grinnell's shots, Dylan Maddux '25 had two and Davis Provost '23 and Oliver Northing '25 took one each.

Yang boosted his career goal total to 33, moving up to fourth all-time at Grinnell and passing Andrew Stephenson. He is also fifth in career shots attempted with 141. Also, Goedeker leaped into the program's top 10 for career assists with 12. He is tied for 10th.

Grinnell travels to Indiana this weekend to face DePauw University on Saturday and Wabash College on Sunday.
