GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College finished off its own volleyball tournament on a strong note Saturday, blanking both the University of Wisconsin-Superior and Minnesota-Morris in Darby Gymnasium.
Olivia Jensen '22 hit a whopping .429 in the 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 win over Wisconsin-Superior, while
Malaina Miles '24 had an efficiency of .364 and
Kaylin Kuhn '22 pounded down 15 kills.
Kuhn also served up five aces and
Emily Brewer '24 contributed two, as both earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Payton Lowrey '22 and
Jenna Keller '24 added 14 and 13 digs, respectively, while Jensen and
Rachel Woock '23 each had two blocks.
Grinnell used a six-point run in the first set to pull away after leading 19-17. Kuhn had three aces in that span. The Pioneers trailed the second set 14-13 before a six-point spurt propelled them to victory. Brewer had two aces during the run and Kuhn a pair of kills. The third set was tied 6-all when Grinnell scored the next four points and never looked back.
Kuhn shredded the Minnesota-Morris defense with 16 kills and a .452 hitting percentage in the Pioneers' 25-15, 25-15, 25-22 victory.
Julianna Roth '23 added 14 assists, Lowrey served up three aces and had 12 digs and
Emmy Nyquist '24 had two aces.
In the first set, Grinnell gradually increased its lead throughout and in the second, the Pioneers finished with a 10-point run to turn a 15-all tie into an easy win. Roth served all of those final points and Kuhn had four kills during that time.
The third set saw Grinnell go on a few small runs to take control and improve to 4-2. During the day's action, Kuhn moved up to 14
th on Grinnell's career digs list with 1,003.
The Pioneers entertain Wartburg College of the American Rivers Conference at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
