GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's soccer team was not only hungry for a victory Wednesday at Springer Field, but had an appetite for a win over Coe College specifically.
The Pioneers made the most of their first home game of the 2021 season with a dominating performance as they halted a five-game losing streak to the Kohawks with a 1-0 win. It marked Grinnell's first victory over Coe since the 2014 campaign.
The Pioneers combined an assaulting offense and stingy defense to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Keepers
Elinor Arneson '23 and
Hannah Malicky '22 combined on the shutout, with Arneson making one save over 45 minutes in the first half and Malicky two in the second half. Their efforts, and the defenders of front of them, helped Grinnell limit Coe to six shots.
The only goal Grinnell needed came in the 12
th minute. The well-designed play began with
Anna Engelhardt '22 delivering a corner kick from the right side to the near post. A hard-charging
Reese Komsthoeft '25 rushed in and delivered a perfect shot off her knee from 8 yards out into the upper right portion of the net.
Komsthoeft's goal sparked a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half. For the game, Grinnell held an 18-6 edge in shots with
Alyssa Radakovich '22 and
Madeleine Dellinger '22 taking three apiece and
Carlie Duus '24,
Hope Nowak '22, Komsthoeft and
Ali Nadalsky '25 two each.
Grinnell heads to Northfield, Minn., to meet Carleton College on Saturday. The Pioneers are back at Springer Field Sunday for a 2 p.m. test against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
