Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Slow start hurts Grinnell women's basketball team in loss to preseason MWC favorite Ripon

RIPON, Wis. - After a rough start, the Grinnell College women's basketball team played on even terms with Midwest Conference preseason favorite Ripon College Tuesday night.

Ripon scored the game's first seven points, and 11 of the first 13, on its way to a 21-6 lead after the first 10 minutes.

But Grinnell tightened things up after that, as Ripon held just a 13-11 scoring edge in the second period for a 34-17 halftime lead. Grinnell outscored the hosts 17-14 in the third period, but it proved to be too big a gap to overcome as Ripon came away with a 62-45 victory.

Grinnell had a cold night shooting the ball, hitting 31 percent of its shots, and was out-rebounded by a 44-30 margin.

Erin Lillis '24, among the top scorers in the MWC, led Grinnell with 16 points while Nicole Ware '25 added 10. Lillis also had five rebounds to go along with two steals. Aidan Coalson '22 also had two steals and one block. Ware added a block, as well.

Grinnell, 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the league, shot just 15.4 percent from the field in the opening period but improved that to 35.7 percent in the second period and 42.9 percent in the third.

Ripon improved to 5-8 overall with the victory and 4-0 in the MWC.

Grinnell is on the road again Saturday with a contest at Lawrence University. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
