Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

GC men's basketball team uses late rally to take down Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - While Grinnell College's trip to Wisconsin earlier this week didn't yield an optimal result, the Pioneers made amends on their next trip to America's Dairyland.

The Pioneers brushed off Tuesday night's loss at Ripon College by taking down Lawrence University 102-91 victory at Alexander Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The win completes Grinnell's season sweep of the Vikings as the Pioneers improved to 2-4 in the Midwest Conference and 7-6 overall. The Vikings - whose only league losses have been to the Pioneers - are 3-2 in the MWC and 6-8 in all games.

Besides Patrick Simms' '22 game-high 29 points, Grinnell got career scoring highs from Dean Mazlish '23 (15 points), Moze Thurmgreene '23 (11) and Mitch Priest '25 (10).

Morgan Walser '22 had a career-high six rebounds, the same total as Will Bebee '22. Simms added four assists and three steals and Tommy Smith '22 blocked a shot.

Grinnell benefited from a great start, bolting out to an 18-6 lead in the first six minutes. The hosts didn't go away, though, and gradually chipped away before the Pioneers went into intermission with a 53-49 edge.

The visitors went up by as many as 10 early in the second half, but again Lawrence rallied and grabbed an 88-84 lead with 3:30 left in the game.

But Grinnell wouldn't fold, as Simms made two free throws and followed with a layup to tie the contest at 88-all. Following a Lawrence miss, Simms tipped in his own missed shot to put the Pioneers ahead to stay.

Following a turnover, Mazlish drained a 3-pointer to push the visitors ahead 93-88 with 1:30 left. Over the next 40 seconds, Lawrence missed two shots and turned the ball over once while Simms made a free throw and Brady Vest '23 added two more to make it 96-88 with 49 seconds left. Grinnell cruised from there for the victory.

Grinnell is slated to play at Monmouth College next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
