Grinnell men's soccer team rallies to maintain edge in MWC race

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Grinnell College men's soccer team maintained its hold on the Midwest Conference lead Tuesday, rallying from a halftime deficit to top Monmouth College 2-1.

The Pioneers, off to their best start in Midwest Conference play since the 2010 season, improved to 4-0-1 in the league and 7-4-1 in all games.

Monmouth, 0-4 in the MWC and 2-9-1 overall, jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 23rd minute and maintained the cushion at intermission.

But then the Pioneers used an offensive combo consisting of experienced veteran and promising newcomer to pull ahead to stay.

That veteran would be Noah Guyton '23, who tied the contest in the 58th minute with his MWC-leading ninth goal of the season.

That tie would remain for only two minutes before the newcomer, Soma Suzuki '26, recorded the first goal of his collegiate career on an assist by Sam Heller '23. It was Heller's first assist of the season and third in his career.

Grinnell got some breathing room in the 87th minute when Caleb Burns '24 found the back of the net on an assist by Guyton. It marked the first-ever collegiate goal for Burns and the third assist this season for Guyton, who boosted his career total to four.

Grinnell dominated the shots battle 15-9, including 9-4 in the second half. Guyton had eight shots, while Burns and Matias Bambi '23 added two apiece.

Jefferson Kolmer '24 collected his first collegiate victory as Grinnell's keeper, making two saves in the process.

Grinnell hits the road this weekend for a pair of contests, including a big league test with Lawrence University Saturday in Appleton, Wis. Game time is 11 a.m. Grinnell steps out of MWC play Sunday to face Lakeland University.
