Grinnell drops contest to Knox despite winning key statistical areas

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College dominated a few key statistical areas in Saturday's football contest at Knox College, but the hosts managed to pull away for a 28-7 victory.

Grinnell (2-3 overall, 2-3 Midwest Conference) led 18-15 in first downs and outgained the Prairie Fire 288-259, including 195-0 through the air.

Grayson Woodhouse '24 completed 14-of-26 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Wilson '25 had seven catches for 109 yards and a score, while Danny Quirk '25 and Nick Rhinehart '25 tallied three catches each - Quirk for 45 yards and Rhinehart for 10. Quirk also led the team in rushing with 62 yards.

The Pioneers featured a balanced defensive attack, with Luke Porter '23 getting seven tackles, Jio Hong '25 making six and Hugh Werner '25 and Adam Khater '23 five apiece. Porter had a sack among his totals.

Knox (3-3, 2-3 MWC) jumped out to a 14-0 lead through the first period before Grinnell put together a drive that started at the end of the initial stanza and into the second. It culminated with a 24-yard TD pass from Woodhouse to Wilson. Rhinehart's extra point made it 14-7 with 12:55 left.

After Knox went up 21-7, Grinnell nearly scored at the end of the half before running out of time at the Knox 1-yard line. The Pioneers also reached Knox territory on their first drive of the third period, but turned the ball over on an interception.

Knox scored a touchdown early in the fourth period to account for the final score.

Grinnell plays at Lake Forest College next Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
