Grinnell steps out of league play to extend its unbeaten streak

PLYMOUTH, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team stepped out of league play Sunday and went on to extend its unbeaten streak to eight matches, toppling Lakeland University 3-1.

The streak is the longest unbeaten string since the 2006 season for the Pioneers, who improved to 9-4-1. The Muskies fell to 3-8-3.

Grinnell opened the scoring in the 38th minute on a goal by Sam Heller '23, the second of both his season and career. There was a double assist on the play, that coming from Braden Nihei '24 and Alex Liu Nowakoski '26. It was the first assist for each this year.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime before Grinnell added to that lead in the 51st minute when Caleb Hoereth '24 scored on a header off a free kick for his first career goal. Dylan Maddux '25 had the assist.

Lakeland cut that lead in half in the 60th minute and the 2-1 margin remained until Noah Guyton '23 scored for Grinnell on a breakaway in the final minute. It was Guyton's MWC-leading 10th goal and 13th of his career. It was the fourth assist this season for Maddux.

Each team had 12 shots and two corner kicks. Guyton recorded five of Grinnell's shots and Maddux had two. Jefferson Kolmer '24 and Jayson Kunkel '26 shared keeper duties for Grinnell, with Kolmer making two saves and Kunkel four.

Grinnell returns to MWC play Saturday with a contest at Ripon College that could potentially secure hosting rights for the league tourney.
