GRINNELL, Iowa –Luther College might have scored almost immediately, but that didn't faze the Grinnell College women's soccer team a bit.
The Pioneers bounced back from that opening Norse goal and a 1-0 halftime deficit to collect a 2-2 tie with the highly-touted visitors Sunday at Springer Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak to Luther as the Pioneers moved their record to 3-1-4 on the season.
Luther, 5-3-3, scored in the third minute of the game and maintained that lead into the half. Grinnell evened the score six minutes into the second half when
Jill Paladino '23 lifted a perfect ball on a corner kick from the left side.
Gia Sundaram '25 won a jump ball for the kick, heading it in directly in front of the goal to beat the Luther keeper for the first score of her career. The assist was Paladino's first of the season.
Luther came right back and scored three minutes later, but again the Pioneers had an answer. In the 76
th minute,
Jane March '24 lined up for a free kick from 40 yards out and slightly right of the goal. She lifted the ball up and the Luther keeper attempted to make the save, but it got away and rolled into the net. The score was March's team-high second goal of the season.
Elinor Arneson '23 played well at keeper, making seven saves. Luther won the shots battle 18-7, with March taking two for Grinnell and Sundaram, Paladino,
Giada Bambi '25,
Bethany McKinney '26 and
Tali Berk '24 adding one each.
Grinnell has a key Midwest Conference contest slated for Wednesday when Cornell College visits Springer Field. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
