GRINNELL, Iowa – The undefeated streak continued for the Grinnell College women's soccer team Wednesday in impressive fashion with a dominating 2-0 win over Cornell College at Springer Field.
The victory, which stretched the Pioneers' unbeaten string to six matches dating back to a Sept. 10 loss to Carleton College, pushed the hosts to 2-0-1 in the Midwest Conference and 4-1-4 overall. Cornell dipped to 1-1 in the league and 2-10-1 in all games.
The contest was scoreless at halftime and remained that way until
Jane March '24 broke the trend with a goal in the 69
th minute. On the play,
Reese Komsthoeft '25 pressured the keeper and forced an errant pass, which March intercepted while charging on the left side. March gained control and beat the keeper, firing the ball into the lower left portion of the net.
It was March's team-high third goal of the season, all scored in the past four games, and fifth of her career.
Kate Nakamura '26 recorded the first goal of her young collegiate career in the 80
th minute to give Grinnell some breathing room. Komsthoeft assisted the goal, gaining possession of the ball 30 yards out and delivering a perfect through ball to a streaking Nakamura to the right side of the box. Nakamura gained control and fired into the bottom right part of the net for the score.
Elinor Arneson '23 worked a masterful game as Grinnell's keeper, making a key save on a Cornell free kick in the first half that bounced off the crossbar while earning her third shutout of the season. Arneson recorded five saves.
The Pioneers' defense was stingy as a whole, posting its second shutout in its past three outings. Grinnell's depth was evident throughout, as the Pioneers used 20 players in the match.
Grinnell outshot the Rams 16-10, including 10-5 in the final 45 minutes. March took four shots for Grinnell,
Tori Thomas '25 added three and
Gia Sundaram '25 and Komsthoeft took two apiece.
Grinnell is back at Springer Field again Saturday to face MWC foe Beloit College. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
