Grinnell women's soccer team takes care of Ripon to set up key league battle next weekend

RIPON, Wis. - It was just a matter of time for the Grinnell College women's soccer team.

After dominating the shots battle the entire first half but coming away empty-handed, the Pioneers got their just reward with a pair of goals in the final stanza for a key 2-0 victory Saturday at Ripon College.

Grinnell remained unbeaten in Midwest Conference play at 6-0-1 while moving to 8-2-4 overall. The Pioneers have won all five of their most recent league games, posting shutouts in three of those. Ripon dipped to 1-5-1 in the MWC and 3-10-3 in all games.

The win sets up a huge battle with Lake Forest College next Saturday in Grinnell, with the MWC title and hosting rights for the league tourney on the line.

The Pioneers whipped off season-highs of 33 shots and 19 shots on goal against Ripon, including a 17-1 edge in shots during the first half which ended with the teams tied 0-0.

Keiko Smith '25 broke that tie in the 57th minute when she found the back of the net for her second score of the season and in her career. Jill Paladino '23 had the assist, her second of the year.

Reese Komsthoeft '25 got into the scoring act just two minutes later, tallying her second goal of the season and third in her career. Grinnell made that lead stick on its way to victory.

Elinor Arneson '23 recorded her fifth shutout of the season at keeper while improving to 7-2-3. She had three saves.

Smith had nine of Grinnell's shots, Giada Bambi '25 added seven, Jane March '24 tallied five, Komsthoeft added four and Kate Nakamura '26 took three.

Before Grinnell turns its focus to Lake Forest, the Pioneers step out of league play Sunday with a contest against Marian University in Fon du Lac, Wis. Action begins at 2:30 p.m.
