Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell posts impressive rally, but comes up short against Marian

FOND du LAC, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force a tie, only to see Marian University score with seven minutes left for a 3-2 non-conference win Sunday.

Marian (9-6-2) scored in the eighth minute for a 1-0 halftime lead and added another goal five minutes into the second half.

But then it was time for Grinnell (9-6-1) to show its offensive muscle, beginning with Peter Murphy's '25 goal in the 71st minute on an assist by Noah Guyton '23. Guyton delivered a pass past the defense to Murphy, who scored inside the far post with a shot from the left side of the box for his second goal of the season and third in his career. It was Guyton's fourth assist of the year.

Just a minute later, Jimmy Miseda '26 scored his first collegiate goal from the right side of the box inside the near post on an assist by Sam Heller '23. It was the second assist of the season for Heller.

The 2-2 tie stood until the 83rd minute when Marian scored what proved to be the game-winner.

Marian won the shots battle 18-14, with Guyton taking seven of Grinnell's shots, Miseda adding three and Murphy two. Jefferson Kolmer '24 and Jayson Kunkel '26 each played a half at keeper for Grinnell, with Kolmer making five saves and Kunkel adding two.

The Pioneers play for the Midwest Conference title and hosting rights for the league tourney with a home Senior Day affair against Lake Forest College Saturday. Action at Springer Field starts at 11 a.m.
