Grinnell netters fall to Cornell in battle of MWC unbeatens

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - In an epic battle between Midwest Conference unbeatens, Grinnell College lost a four-set test at Cornell Cornell in volleyball action Wednesday night.

The Rams clinched the MWC title with the 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23 win while improving to 7-0 in league play and 18-7 overall. Grinnell, already assured a spot in next week's MWC Tourney, is 6-1 in the league and 17-9 overall.

Payton Lowrey '23 tied a Grinnell school record for digs in a four-setter with 36, a figure that ranks fourth in all matches. Wednesday's total pushed Lowrey's season digs total to 589, second in Grinnell history, while moving over the 2,000-dig mark for her career. Lowrey has 2,007 digs, a continuing school record.

Additionally, Emily Brewer '24 continued to move up Grinnell's career assists list as her total of 34 pushed her to 1,592 all-time. That is tied for seventh in program history.

Jenna Keller '24 and Hayley Taka '26 each had 11 kills for Grinnell, Lowrey served three aces and Brewer added two. Besides Lowrey's digs total, Emmy Nyquist '24 came up with 15, Sophie Weber '25 had 12 and Brewer contributed 10.

After losing the first set, the teams played even in the second and were tied at 15-all midway through. Taka and Keller had consecutive kills to give Grinnell a two-point edge, but Cornell rallied for a 22-21 lead.

The set was later tied 23-all before a Rams' attack error and Brewer's ace gave Grinnell the win.

Grinnell took a 12-9 lead in the third set before the Rams went on a seven-point run to take command. Girnnell did draw within one a few times before Cornell finished off the win.

The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the fourth set, but the Pioneers weren't fazed and eventually took a 9-8 lead on Lowrey's serve. The squads went back and forth before Grinnell nudged closer to victory, going ahead 22-18 on Weber's serve.

However, a six-point run by Cornell put the Rams within match point. Keller staved that off with a kill before Cornell followed with a kill to secure the win.

Grinnell concludes the regular season Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Lake Forest College. The same teams will battle again in the first round of the MWC Tournament next Friday.
