GRINNELL, Iowa – A convincing home victory over Cornell College Tuesday not only solidified the conference standing of Grinnell College's men's soccer team, it also put the Pioneers in territory they haven't seen in more than a decade.
For the first time since 2010, Grinnell has started a season 3-0 in Midwest Conference play with a huge 4-2 victory over the Rams at Springer Field.
The Pioneers, who outshot Cornell 19-9, rallied from a 2-1 deficit with three unanswered goals while improving to 6-4 overall. The Rams are 1-2 in the MWC and 5-4-1 in all games.
Dylan Maddux '25 had two of Grinnell's goals, while
Noah Guyton '23 and
Peter Murphy '25 each scored once.
Guyton opened the scoring just four minutes into the game with his league-leading eighth goal of the season. Assists went to
Nick Fahmy '26 and
Jaxon Willoughby '26. On the counter play, Guyton beat his defender and raced down the field with the ball. As he entered the box, the keeper came to challenge and slipped, allowing Guyton to fire the ball into the lower left part of the net.
Cornell added goals in the ninth and 19
th minutes, but Maddux provided the equalizer with a penalty kick a minute later. As the keeper dove to one side, Maddux delivered a perfect shot into the lower left portion of the net to tie things at 2-all.
The score remained 2-all through halftime before Maddux gave Grinnell a lead it would never surrender with his fourth goal of the season in the 65
th minute. Guyton had the assist on the play, firing a perfect pass to a streaking Maddux on the right side of the goal. As the keeper came out, Maddux put the ball into the lower left portion of the net.
Three minutes later, Murphy scored his first goal of the season on assists by Maddux and
Billy Cherres '26. On the play, Murphy took a pass as he raced deep into the box and beat the keeper with a ball into the bottom right part of the net.
After Cornell's two early goals, Grinnell keeper
Carter Benson '24 shut the Rams out the rest of the game while recording two saves.
Guyton led Grinnell with six shots, Maddux added four and Cherres, Murphy, Willoughby and
Matias Bambi '23 took two apiece.
Grinnell is at home again Saturday when Beloit College visits Springer Field for another MWC contest. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
