Grinnell volleyball team celebrates Senior Night with sweep of Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa – Senior Night proved to be a great night for the Grinnell College volleyball team.

The Pioneers swept past Lawrence University in under an hour at Darby Gymnasium Friday, winning by scores of 25-8, 25-15 and 25-14 to stay perfect in the Midwest Conference at 4-0.

Grinnell, 13-6 overall, hit a season-best 370 with 43 kills on 92 swings and just nine errors. Lawrence, 0-2 in the MWC and 1-20 in all matches, was limited to an even .000 hitting efficiency.

Payton Lowrey '23, the team's lone senior on the court in a match that saw 14 Grinnell players see action, collected four ace serves to put her at 192 for her career. That's just seven off the school record.

Lowrey also led the team in digs with 26. Hayley Taka '26 pounded down 16 kills and hit .500, while Nicole Mlynski '26 added eight kills. Emily Brewer '24 distributed 25 assists and also served three aces. Mlynski had two total blocks.

Lowrey went on an eight-point service run early in the first set as Grinnell won easily. Grinnell led the second set 14-12 before a key five-point run that included two aces by Brewer and a pair of kills by Taka.

Another five-point run gave the Pioneers some breathing room in the third set. Brewer later ended the match with an ace serve.

Grinnell is home again Saturday when Ripon College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. test.
