Grinnell men's basketball team halts losing skid to Lake Forest with 8-point road decision

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team entered Saturday's game with tough luck against Lake Forest College, having lost five in a row to the Foresters dating back to 2019.

That all changed, though, as the Pioneers built a 42-33 halftime lead on their way to a 90-82 road victory in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams.

Grinnell, 2-3 overall, had a balanced scoring attack that saw Dillon Gestring '25 score 16 points, Aiden Gilbert '23 and Mitch Priest '25 tallying 13 apiece and Tate McLean '23 putting in 10. Gestring also had eight boards and two steals, the same steal total as Zach Rosen '26 and David Bluder '25. Gilbert dished out three assists.

Lake Forest, 1-3 overall, led a good chunk of the first half and was up 27-21 following a layup at the 8:10 mark. But then Grinnell went on a key 14-2 run to go ahead to stay. McLean began the spurt with a layup, Moze Thurmgreene '23 got a free throw and Gilbert two charity shots to bring the Pioneers within 27-26.

Gestring put Grinnell up by a point with a layup, followed by a trey from Priest to make it 31-27. After a basket by Lake Forest, Gestring and McLean hit consecutive layups to make it a 35-29 Grinnell lead.

The Pioneers step out of league play Monday with a home game against Kenyon College. Tip-off at Darby Gymnasium is 6 p.m.
