GC women's basketball team stands firm to snap losing streak in Lake Forest gym

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College withstood a late Lake Forest College rally, standing firm down the stretch to earn a 67-63 women's basketball road victory Saturday afternoon.

The win to open Midwest Conference play snapped the Pioneers' four-game losing streak at Lake Forest, dating back to 2017, and was just the third win ever on the Foresters' court.

Kelsey Ericksen '26 erupted for 23 points to lead Grinnell, hitting 7-of-10 shots from 3-point land in the process. The 3-point total is tied for fifth in program history, and the most since Jessica Shotts made eight in a game on Nov. 21, 2009. Ericksen's 3-point success rate of 70 percent is 10th in Pioneer history.

Grinnell, 2-3 overall, led 19-16 after one period before going wild in the second quarter with a 17-3 edge to open up a 17-point halftime lead at 36-19.

Lake Forest closed within 13 points after three quarters and crept closer in the final frame, making it a 55-53 game with 4:04 left.

However, Sarah Toay '23 responded in a big way for Grinnell with a layup and P.K. Hall '25 hit a key 3-pointer from the left sideline following a Lake Forest miss to put the Pioneers on top 60-53 with2:55 left.

Consecutive layups cut the gap to three for Lake Forest, 0-1 in the MWC and 1-2 in all games. But again the Pioneers stepped up, as Erin Lillis '24 calmly sank two free throws with 1:19 left to make it 62-57.

The Foresters got a 3-pointer a short time later, but Grinnell held its ground once again. Following a miss, Toay grabbed a key offensive rebound. Lillis was fouled with 33 ticks left on the clock and sank both charity shots to make it a 64-60 lead.

After forcing another Lake Forest miss, Grinnell extended its lead to six when Sara Booher '25 was fouled and made both free throws with 29 seconds remaining.

Lake Forest closed within three points with a trey, but Lillis sealed the win with a free throw at the 15-second mark.

Besides Ericksen's huge scoring total, Lillis also scored in double digits with 11. Booher grabbed seven rebounds, Hall had a career-best six and Lillis, Annabel Dougherty '25 and Skylar Thomas '26 added five each. Lillis also had three assists and three steals.

Grinnell will step out of league play Tuesday when Mount Mercy University visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
