Grinnell netters see stellar season end with loss to Lake Forest at Midwest Conference Tourney

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team saw its stellar season come to an end Friday, falling in four sets to Lake Forest College in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals.

Second-seeded Lake Forest (16-12) won the first set 25-23, but the third-seeded Pioneers rebounded with a 25-21 win. Lake Forest rallied, though, posting consecutive 25-21 wins to secure a spot in the tournament title match Saturday.

Grinnell (17-11) was led at the net by Jenna Keller '24, who had 14 kills. Hayley Taka '26 and Rachel Woock '23 added 11 and 10, respectively. Emily Brewer '24 added 41 assists, while Amelia Adam '25 served two aces.

Malaina Miles '24 contributed three blocks and Payton Lowrey '23 led the digs category with 27. Woock added 12 digs and Brewer and Emmy Nyquist '24 came up with 10 apiece.

After losing the first set, the Pioneers came out strong in the second. Leading 17-16, they went on a 6-1 run that included three kills by Woock and a combo block from Miles and Keller. Kills by Miles accounted for the final two points.

Grinnell grabbed a 9-5 lead in the third set before the Foresters rallied for the win. The Pioneers were behind 20-14 in the fourth set but got a final gasp with a four-point run that included a kill by Keller and block from Woock and Miles.

The Pioneers could get no closer than two the rest of the way as Lake Forest secured the win.

Lowrey finished her spectacular career as Grinnell's career leader in service aces (210), digs (2,067), digs per set (4.64) and sets played (445), as well as digs in a season (649).
