GC women's soccer team continues hot streak directly into MWC Tourney title match

GRINNELL, Iowa – The weather may have been miserable Saturday, but things were downright sunny for the Grinnell College women's soccer team.

Facing Cornell College in cold, rainy and windy conditions in the opening round of the Midwest Conference Tournament at Springer Field, the Pioneers scored with 12 minutes to go to secure a 2-1 victory.

The win by the top-seeded host Pioneers sends them to the MWC Tourney title match for the first time since 2016, where they'll play third-seeded Beloit College at 1 p.m. Sunday. That winner advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The nasty weather didn't faze the Pioneers in the slightest, as they opened the scoring just six minutes into the game on a goal by Tali Berk '24 that was assisted by Jill Paladino '23. Paladino lifted a free kick from nearly 40 yards to the right of center. It ricocheted off the cross bar, bounced straight down and Berk tapped it in past Cornell's keeper. It was Berk's second goal of the season and third of her career, as well as Paladino's team-high third assist.

The 1-0 lead held through halftime before the Rams got a goal to tie it in the 65th minute.

Just 13 minutes later, Keiko Smith '25 scored on an assist by Reese Komsthoeft '25. On the play, Komsthoeft sent the ball from atop the box to Smith, who was streaking down the right side of the box. She beat her defender and fired a shot almost parallel with the goal, which went through the Cornell keeper's hands and into the net. The goal was the third of the year and career for Smith, while Komsthoeft collected her second assist.

Grinnell dominated the shots battle 13-3 and managed three corners compared to none for the Rams. Smith had nearly half of Grinnell's shots with six, Berk added three and Paladino, Jane March '24, Komsthoeft and Ramona Delborne '26 had one apiece.

Elinor Arneson '23 earned the victory at keeper, making two saves.

At 11-2-4, Grinnell matched its highest victory total since the 2013 campaign as it pursues its first MWC Tourney title since 2006. Cornell finishes at 4-13-3.
