Grinnell women's soccer team punches ticket to NCAA D-III Tourney with thrilling PK shootout decision over Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa – In what has already been a thrilling season, it's only fitting Grinnell College's women's soccer team finish off its Midwest Conference Tournament run in similar fashion.

Tied with Beloit College 0-0 after regulation and both overtimes at Springer Field on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Pioneers – sparked by a large and enthusiastic home crowd – came from behind in the penalty kick shootout to win 4-2 and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The tourney title and NCAA berth are both firsts for Grinnell since the 2006 season. Grinnell is heading to the NCAA Tourney for the fifth time in program history.

Both teams had chances to score in regulation, but Grinnell keeper Elinor Arneson '23 and her Beloit counterpart made spectacular saves. That led to overtime, where neither team could dent the scoreboard in the two, 10-minute periods.

That resulted in one of the most nail-biting events in sports, the penalty kick shootout. Shooting toward the south goal, Antarah Chopra '23 began things by calmly stepping to the line and delivering a shot to the lower left side that the Beloit keeper momentarily got a hand on before the ball trickled into the net.

Beloit made its ensuing shot, Grinnell missed its and Beloit made another for a 2-1 lead. Maddie Beltramo '25 got things all tied up when she fired a bullet into the upper left part of the net.

Arneson followed with a spectacular save on Beloit's next shot, diving to her left and knocking the ball away with one hand. Grinnell then went ahead 3-2 when Tali Berk '24 sent a rocket into the upper right part of the net that the Buccaneers' keeper had no chance of saving.

The door opened up immensely on Beloit's next try, as the ball sailed high over the goal. Displaying ice water in her veins, the Pioneers' Allison Wehrman '24 calmly approached the ball, kicked it and sent it into the upper right part of the net, sending the Pioneers and their fans onto the field in celebration.

Grinnell, which has lost just once in its last 14 outings, is 11-2-5 on the season. Beloit finishes its campaign at 9-4-3.

Beloit held an 11-8 edge in shots. Jill Paladino '23 had two of Grinnell's shots, while Keiko Smith '25, Bethany McKinney '26, Jane March '24, Giada Bambi '25, Ramona Delborne '26 and Berk had one each.

Arneson was simply spectacular at the keeper spot, recording eight saves while registering her eighth shutout of the year.

The NCAA Tournament field and brackets will be announced tomorrow at 1 p.m. at ncaa.com.
