GRINNELL, Iowa – Though playing its third game in four days, the Grinnell College men's basketball team showed no signs of fatigue while racing to a 124-72 victory over Westminster College Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers shot a season-best 88.2 percent from the free throw line (15-of-17) at Darby Gymnasium while improving to 5-6 overall. The Blue Jays dipped to 1-7.
Aiden Gilbert '23 lit up the nets for 24 points to lead Grinnell, while
Adam Phillips '23 added 17 points and
Dillon Gestring '25 tallied 14.
Tolu Johnson '25 and Gestring each had career-highs for rebounds with 10 and eight, respectively.
Dean Mazlish '23 and Phillips each had three steals, with Phillips' total marking a career-best. Mazlish also dished out four assists.
Grinnell broke away from a close game early, using a seven-point run to turn a one-point edge into an eight-point lead. Phillips began the spurt with a 3-pointer, Johnson scored inside and Gilbert made a layup to make it a 16-8 Grinnell lead with 14:20 left in the first half.
Later, leading 19-13, Grinnell went on a 12-2 run to pull away for good. Phillips and
Tate McLean '23 each had treys for Grinnell and Gilbert, Gestring and Mazlish added buckets for a 31-15 lead.
Grinnell built its cushion to 63-35 by halftime and cruised to victory from there.
The Pioneers are off until Dec. 31 when they host Principia College at Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
