Tough shooting night hurts Grinnell in setback at Cornell College

Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - A tough night shooting the ball, both from the field and free throw line, hurt the Grinnell College men's basketball team in a 100-78 setback at Cornell College Wednesday night.

The Pioneers shot just 35 percent from the field, including 26.7 percent from 3-point land, as well as 45.5 percent from the line as they dipped to 2-2 in the Midwest Conference and 3-6 overall.

Cornell, which improved to 1-2 in the league and 2-6 overall, shot 58.7 percent from the field while breaking out to a 59-39 halftime lead.

Aiden Gilbert '23 scored 22 points for Grinnell and Dean Mazlish '23 tied a career-high with 15. Mazlish was 4-for-6 from the 3-point line.

Jackson Leone '25 grabbed four rebounds, Tate McLean '23 added three assists and Nicholas Courtney '26 and Brady Vest '23 had two steals each. McLan and Vest also blocked a shot.

Cornell shot out to an 8-0 lead before Gilbert's consecutive layups cut the gap in half. Grinnell again made it a four-point deficit when Dillon Gestring's '25 3-pointer brought the visitors within 11-7. However, Cornell scored the next nine points and never looked back.

Grinnell is back in action again Thursday night when Emmaus Bible College visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
