GC women's basketball team's comeback at Cornell comes up just short

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - A furious comeback by the Grinnell College women's basketball team turned up just short in a 56-47 loss at Cornell College Wednesday.

The Pioneers, who trailed by 13 points with just over seven minutes remaining in the game, rallied to within four points in the final stages before the Rams secured the win.

Erin Lillis '24 again led Grinnell (2-7, 1-3 Midwest Conference) with a 13-point output and Skylar Thomas '26 added 11 points. Thomas connected on 3-of-5 tries from 3-point land.

Sara Booher '25 and Grace Marsh '25 added five rebounds apiece, Thomas came up with four assists and Booher registered three steals.

Cornell (4-4, 3-0 MWC) burst out to a 17-6 lead by the end of the first period, but the Pioneers rallied to close the gap to 26-17 by halftime. The Rams kept Grinnell at bay in the third period, finishing the quarter with a 39-29 edge.

Cornell extended its lead to 45-32 with 7:29 left, but Grinnell refused to fold. Lillis and Thomas sank consecutive jumpers to reduce the Rams' lead to 45-36.

After Cornell hit two free throws, Lillis cashed in on a jumper and Kelsey Ericksen '26 drained a trey to make it a 47-41 game with 4:11 left. The Rams followed with a basket, but Nikki Ware '25 was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all three charity tosses to bring Grinnell within 49-44.

After a Cornell basket, Marsh countered with a 3-pointer and suddenly the Rams' cushion had dwindled to 51-47 with 1:48 left. However, Grinnell could pull no closer and Cornell scored five points down the stretch.

Grinnell closes out its pre-winter break slate Friday against Waldorf College in Forest City. Game time is 6 p.m.
