Pioneer men's tennis team making the most of tough tests at UW-Whitewater Invite

Luther 6, Grinnell 3
Wheaton 6, Grinnell 3

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - Seeking to be at its best at the end of the season, Grinnell College's men's tennis team is tackling a beefed-up schedule early in the 2022 campaign.

This weekend offers exactly that opportunity, as the Pioneers are taking on three high-quality foes at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational.

Grinnell battled Luther College, a team that was ranked nationally at the end of last season, and Wheaton College Saturday at the Lake Geneva Tennis Club.

Jonah Gilmore '24 and Henry Bridgers '24 got Grinnell on the board first against Luther with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles, though Luther won in the other divisions.

The Norse added wins in four of six singles matches to come out on top 6-3. Grinnell got a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory at No. 4 by Paul Elghouayel '24 and 6-4, 6-2 decision from Karch Knoll '25 at No. 6.

The match with Wheaton was similar, with the Thunder grabbing a 2-1 lead through doubles. Elghouayel and Aiden Klass '25 got Grinnell's victory, an 8-5 decision at No. 3.

In singles, Bowen Mince '22 knocked off his foe by a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 1 and Wilder Cooke '25 breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6. But it wasn't enough as Wheaton won the match 6-3.

Grinnell finishes off the tourney Sunday against UW-Whitewater.
