Grinnell men's tennis team gets 2022 spring campaign off to hot start

GRINNELL, Iowa - It may have been cold outside, but the Grinnell College men's tennis team was playing red hot as the Pioneers opened the 2022 spring season with two wins Saturday.

The Pioneers opened the day at the Bear Center Field House with a 9-0 win over Grand View University, and followed up with an 8-1 decision over Central College.

The Pioneers showed their grit in the opening match as Bowen Mince '22 claimed a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles after trailing 5-2 in the first set.

Sam Rudenberg '25 also won a marathon, rallying from a 2-6 opening-set loss at No. 2 to win 6-0, 1-0. He held serve in the second set to go up 4-0 after a 15-minute deuce game.

Rounding out the list of singles winners, in order, were Wilder Cooke '25 (6-1, 6-0), Luka Shaker-Check '25 (6-2, 6-2) and William Chhim '25 (6-1, 6-0).

Doubles winners were the duos of Mince-Rudenberg and Cooke-Spencer Skidmore '24, both by 8-5 margins. Grinnell also got one forfeit win in singles and another in doubles.

Singles winners against Central were Leo Esztergomi '24 (6-1, 6-0), Paul Elghouayel '24 (6-1, 6-3), Aiden Klass '25 (6-1, 6-1), Charles Yung '24 (4-6, 6-4, 1-0), Simon Kennel '23 (6-0, 6-0) and Steven Chen '23 (6-4, 6-1).

The Pioneers also won the top two doubles flights with the duos of Jonah Gilmore '24-Henry Bridgers '24 (8-2) and Esztergomi-Karch Knoll '25 (8-0).

Grinnell heads to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite next weekend.
