Grinnell baseball team puts on record-breaking performance in season-opener sweep

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Even though the Grinnell baseball team has been idle since last May, the Pioneers showed no signs of rust in their season opener Saturday.

Grinnell put on a school-record performance on its way to sweeping Elmhurst University by scores of 22-10 and 18-9.

The 40 runs scored are a program-best for one day, and school records also fell in the opening game with 21 RBIs and being hit by seven pitches. The 22 runs and four triples tied records, while Matthew Inaba '22 tied a program mark for triples with two.

The second game, in which Grinnell tied a school record for sacrifice flies with three, saw Luke Porter '23 and Ian Brown '24 each getting four hits for the Pioneers.

Grinnell shot out to a 7-0 lead, scoring two runs in the second and third innings and three more in the fifth. Nate L'Esperance '23 had a solo homer in the second to lead the charge, while Brown blasted a three-run shot in the fifth.

Elmhurst rallied to tie the game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, but after that it was all Grinnell.

The Pioneers scored three runs in the sixth, two more in the seventh, four in the eighth and two in the ninth. Luke Porter '23 belted a two-run double in the sixth to spark the attack.

Bradley Carlton '25 got the pitching win in relief, while Ian Feld '25 tossed one-hit ball over the final four innings for the save.

In the opener, Porter banged out four hits while Michael Flaherty '25 and Inaba added three each.

Grinnell scored solo runs in each of the first two innings before Elmhurst cut the lead in half in the third. The Pioneers went up 3-1 in the top of the fourth, but the Bluejays responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.

The Pioneers delivered devastating blows in the fifth and seventh innings, scoring four runs in the fifth and six in the seventh. Flaherty's solo homer was the key hit during that span.

After Elmhurst scored twice in the seventh, Grinnell answered with another six in the eighth as Porter bashed a two-run shot.

The Bluejays scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Grinnell came back with three in the ninth.

Kenji Kajita '22 earned the pitching win in relief for Grinnell.

The same two teams meet again Sunday.
