GC men's tennis team wraps up Midwest Conference regular-season play with perfect mark

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's tennis team put on another dominating display Saturday, blanking both Monmouth College and Illinois College 9-0 to finish Midwest Conference play with a perfect 6-0 mark.

With the wins at the Bear Center Field House, Grinnell secured the top seed for the MWC Team Tournament while stretching its victory streak against league foes to 170 matches dating back to 2002-03.

The Pioneers dropped just one game against Monmouth in a match that included 8-0 doubles wins by the duos of Leo Esztergomi '24-Simon Kennel '23, Charles Yung '24-Spencer Skidmore '24 and Wilder Cooke '25-Luka Shaker-Check '25.

Esztergomi, Cooke, Skidmore, Kennel and Shaker-Check all won 6-0, 6-0 in the top five singles spots while Yung was a 6-1, 6-0 victor at No. 6.

Against Illinois College, the duos of Esztergomi-Kennel and Yung-Skidmore won 8-0 while the Cooke-Shaker-Check tandem won 8-1. Skidmore, Kennel, Shaker-Check and Yung won 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. Esztergomi posted a 6-0, 6-2 win and Cooke was a 6-0, 6-1 victor.

Grinnell also had a team play at NAIA powerhouse Midland University Saturday in Fremont, Neb. The hosts posted a 6-3 win as Grinnell got victories from Bowen Mince '22 and Sam Rudenberg '25 at No. 1 doubles (7-6), Karch Knoll '25 at No. 3 singles (6-4, 4-6, 10-8) and Aiden Klass '25 at No. 6 singles (6-3, 2-6, 10-1).

Grinnell, 11-11, wraps up the regular season when the University of Wisconsin-Eau Clare visits the Bear Center Field House on Sunday. The MWC Tournament follows at the end of next week.
