Grinnell women's tennis team wins NCAA D-III Regional Opener as Tang sets school mark for season wins

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's tennis team passed its NCAA Division III Regional Tournament opening test with flying colors while the team's top player set a new school record.

The Pioneers blanked Northwestern-St. Paul 5-0 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex Thursday to move into Friday's regional semifinal.

Sabrina Tang '23 helped seal the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, giving her a school-record 28 victories on the season. Tang, ranked 12th nationally and third in the region, had been tied with Milica Cvrkota for the all-time lead.

Additionally, the win moved Grinnell's season record to 20-6 to tie a program mark for victories.

The Pioneers, ranked 35th nationally and sixth in the region, got off to a great start by easily taking all three doubles matches. Tang and Ioanna Giannakou '24, ranked 15th regionally, won 8-1 at the top spot. Giannakou won her 22nd doubles match this season, which ranks 14th in program history. Mira Manchanda '24 and Irene Agusti '24 earned an 8-3 victory at No. 2, while Erin Jarvis '25 and Lily Perrin '25 won 8-2 at No. 3.

Besides Tang, Giannakou posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles to secure the team shutout.

Grinnell, which has advanced to the second round of regional play for the fifth time in program history, takes on UW-Whitewater in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Friday.
