Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell men's soccer team stretches winning streak against Coe to 8 with shutout

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Not only has Grinnell College had Coe College's number in men's soccer in recent years, the Pioneers have done so with incredible defense.

The Pioneers shut down the Kohawks 3-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday, stretching Grinnell's winning streak in the series to eight matches dating back to 2014.

Even more amazing, Grinnell has allowed just three goals in those contests and posted five shutouts.

Grinnell's defense limited Coe to just two shots, both in the first half. Keeper Carter Benson '24 recorded his third career shutout while making two saves.

Offensively, Noah Guyton '23 got his final Pioneer season off to a spectacular start with two goals. Jaxon Willoughby '26 added the other goal in his GC debut.

Guyton opened the scoring just 13 minutes in when he found the back of the net for his fourth career goal, and Willoughby scored 15 minutes later with the second goal of his career. Willoughby's tally was assisted by Billy Cherres '26 in his Pioneer soccer debut, as well as Peter Murphy '25.

Guyton put on the finishing touches 13 minutes into the second half when he drilled home a penalty kick.

Grinnell managed 11 shots, with six by Guyton including five on goal. Willoughby added three shots and Murphy and Sam Heller '23 had one apiece.

Grinnell plays its home opener Saturday when Elmhurst University visits Springer Field for a noon battle.
