GRINNELL, Iowa – Fans looking for a defensive-minded, extremely physical soccer match got all they wanted in Saturday afternoon's Grinnell College men's contest against Elmhurst University.
In a contest featuring nine yellow cards, a majority on the visitors, Elmhurst eked out a 1-0 non-conference win at Springer Field.
Grinnell (1-0-1) outshot Elmhurst 8-5 in the first half, but was unable to dent the scoreboard. The lone goal of the game came from Elmhurst (2-0) in the 67
th minute.
While the Pioneers played stellar defense, they also won the shots battle 10-9 and had several opportunities to crack the goal in the closing minutes.
Dylan Maddux '25 had four of Grinnell's shots, including a pair on goal, while
Noah Guyton '23 recorded two shots with one on goal.
The other shot on goal came from Corbin Badamer '26. Rounding out Grinnell's shots list were
Billy Cherres '26,
Matias Bambi '23 and
Evan Larson '26.

Carter Benson '24 had another strong effort in net, making two saves.
Grinnell hosts its annual alumni game Sunday at 3 p.m. Grinnell returns to regular-season action Wednesday with a 5 p.m. test at the University of Dubuque.
