Big plays propel Monmouth past Grinnell on soggy Saturday

GRINNELL, Iowa – Big plays proved to be the difference as Monmouth College pulled away from Grinnell College for a 48-0 football win on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Springer Field.

Of the six touchdowns scored by Monmouth, five covered 24 yards or more and three were at least 50 yards.

Grinnell (0-1) held its own much of the game, but couldn't overcome the Fighting Scots' quick scores.

Grayson Woodhouse '24 connected on 7-of-15 passes for Grinnell for 55 yards, while Garrett Wilson '25 had one catch for 27 yards and Danny Quirk '25 two for 18.

On the defensive side of the ball, Davis Cooper '26, Josh Jones '25 and Hugh Werner '25 all had five stops. Jones had two tackles for loss, Jio Hong '25 intercepted a pass and Luke Porter '23 recovered a fumble.

Monmouth (1-1) scored twice in the first period and twice again in the second for a 28-0 halftime lead. The recovered fumble by Porter came on the Fighting Scots' first play of the second period and Hong's pick in the third, a quarter that saw the visitors take a 38-0 lead.

Grinnell takes to the road next weekend, facing Lawrence University 1 p.m. Saturday in Appleton, Wis. The Pioneers will look to feed off the momentum from last year's matchup with the Vikings, which Grinnell won in thrilling overtime fashion.
