GRINNELL, Iowa – The weather may have been cloudy and rainy, but things were plenty bright for the Grinnell College men's soccer team Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers struck for two goals in a seven-minute span to dispose of Central College 2-0 in non-conference play at Springer Field. The victory snapped a six-match winless streak against the Dutch, dating back to 2009.
Carter Benson '24 weaved his second shutout of the season at goal, making four saves for Grinnell (2-2).
Noah Guyton '23, a scoring machine so far this season, proved to be again with a goal in the 68
th minute on an assist by
Jimmy Miseda '26. On the play, Miseda streaked toward the goal, beating the keeper and defender from Central (1-2-1) and making a sliding kick to his left. Guyton, charging hard to the goal, made contact and delivered it in from 6 yards out.
Not to be outdone,
Jaxon Willoughby '26 cashed in on his second goal of the year in the 75
th minute. Willoughby made a strong charge with the ball and shot. The Central keeper made the save, but the ball caromed off and Willoughby possessed it and threaded the needle from the left side of the net for the goal.
Grinnell won the shots battle 12-8, with Guyton taking four,
Billy Cherres '26 adding three and
Peter Murphy '25 and Willoughby getting two each.
Grinnell has no time to rest, as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire comes calling Sunday. Action at Springer Field is slated for 2 p.m.
