GC volleyball team comes up just short at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team put up a great fight, but lost a four-set thriller at the University of Dubuque Friday night.

Set scores, in favor of the hosts, were 25-21, 20-25, 25-22 and 25-23.

Grinnell (6-3) was paced at the net by Rachel Woock '23, who hit a sizzling .324 while converting 17 kills. Hayley Taka '26 added 10 kills and Emily Brewer '24 tallied 44 assists.

Julianna Vajda '24 added three ace serves, while Woock and Brewer had two each. Ella O'Neill '25 contributed three total blocks.

Perhaps the most-watched stat came via Payton Lowrey '23, who piled up 21 digs and is now just an eyelash away from the school career record. She needs only four more in that department to tie the Grinnell mark of 1,617 by Jamie Snider, who played from 1996-99. Emmy Nyquist '24 added 14 digs, Sophie Weber '25 tallied 11 and Woock came up with 10.

In the opening set, Grinnell (6-3) used a three-point run to tie things at 21-all before Dubuque (6-5) scored four in a row for the win.

Grinnell trailed the second set by a point before a key three-point run that included kills by Nicole Mlynski '26, Malaina Miles '24 and Brewer gave the visitors the lead for good at 20-18. Later, with Grinnell leading by two, Taka had two kills and Dubuque followed with a setting error to tie the match at 1-all.

The Pioneers built a 20-18 lead in the third set, only to see the hosts respond with a six-point run on their way to victory. Dubuque did the same thing in the fourth set, rallying from a 22-21 deficit to post the set and match win.

Grinnell will remain in Dubuque overnight to compete in the Loras Tournament Saturday. The Pioneers face eighth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College at noon and Saint Mary's University of Minnesota at 2 p.m.
