GC volleyball team opens MWC play on dominating note with sweep of Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Grinnell College's volleyball team kicked off Midwest Conference play in dominating fashion Friday night, sweeping past Monmouth College in three sets.

Set scores, in favor of the visitors, were 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21. The win was the Pioneers' sixth in a row over the Fighting Scots as the visitors improved to 8-4 overall. Monmouth, also playing its league opener, dipped to 5-7.

Grinnell featured a balanced hitting attack, with Malaina Miles '24 tallying 10 kills, Hayley Taka '26 coming up with nine, Nicole Mlynski '26 putting down six and Jenna Keller '24 adding five. Miles and Keller each hit .333, as did Emily Brewer '24.

Brewer also had 33 assists and Julianna Vajda '24 and Ella O'Neill '25 came up with three aces each. O'Neill led the team in blocks with two, while Payton Lowrey '23 tallied 16 digs and Emmy Nyquist '24 and Brewer 10 each.

Grinnell overcame an early deficit in the first set with a seven-point run that included an ace by Nyquist and two kills from Miles, turning an 8-6 gap into a 13-6 lead. After the Pioneers got to set point at 24-18, the Fighting Scots reeled off five straight points before an attack error gave Grinnell the win.

The Pioneers used a seven-point run to break open the second set. The run included two aces by Vajda and pair of kills by Keller as Grinnell went ahead 14-5. The Pioneers led by as many as 11 before the hosts again rallied, coming within 23-21. But a kill by Brewer and Fighting Scot ball handling error finished off Grinnell's win.

The third set was tied 10-all before the Pioneers took the lead for good with a five-point run that included two kills by Taka. Grinnell never looked back in securing the set and match win.
