Offensive eruption propels GC women's soccer team to win over Lady Blues

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Scoring came early and often as Grinnell College's women's soccer team erupted for a season-high goal total in a 4-2 victory at Illinois College Saturday.

Grinnell, which scored three times in the first half to open up a 3-1 cushion at intermission, beat the Lady Blues for the fifth time in a row while improving to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference. Illinois College is 0-6-1 in all matches and 0-1 in the league.

The Pioneers spread the wealth on offense, as Jane March '24, Keiko Smith '25, Reese Komsthoeft '25 and Tori Thomas '25 all scored their first goals of the season.

March opened the scoring just eight minutes in on an assist by Smith. Illinois College tied the game in the 35th minute, but Smith gave Grinnell a lead it would never relinquish a minute later. Komsthoeft added a goal five minutes later for a 3-1 edge. The Pioneers got an insurance goal in the 80th minute by Thomas.

March now has three goals in her career, while Komsthoeft and Thomas have two each.

Jill Paladino '23, Giada Bambi '25 and Komsthoeft all had two shots for Grinnell, while Smith, March, Carlie Duus '24 and Thomas added one apiece. Keeper Elinor Arneson '23 had a pair of saves in collecting the win.

Grinnell returns to Springer Field Wednesday to entertain defending MWC regular-season champ Knox College. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
