GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's soccer team entered Wednesday's Midwest Conference soccer contest with Knox College having lost eight in a row to the Prairie Fire, but the Pioneers didn't leave that way.
Grinnell controlled play most of the way, including nearly the entire second half, in a 0-0 tie with the defending conference champions at Springer Field. Grinnell won the shots battle 11-8, including a 6-4 edge in the second half and eight total shots on goal compared to three for Knox.
Additionally, the Pioneers held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks including a 6-0 edge in the final half. The last of those, with time nearly expired, led to a thrilling exchange that nearly resulted in a goal for Grinnell.
Elinor Arneson '23 posted her second shutout of the season as Grinnell's keeper, making three saves in the process.
Keiko Smith '25, the defending MWC Offensive Player of the week, had two shots for Grinnell as did
Giada Bambi '25 and
Jill Paladino '23. Taking one shot each were
Tessa Leahy '25,
Jane March '24,
Ella Hunt '26,
Carlie Duus '24 and
Ramona Delborne '26. Bambi had two of Grinnell's shots on goal.
The Pioneers are now 3-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the MWC, while Knox moved to 0-7-1 in all matches and 0-0-1 in the league.
Grinnell steps out of MWC play Sunday when Luther College visits Springer Field for a 3 p.m. contest.
