Grinnell goes toe-to-toe with Wartburg before falling in 3 sets

WAVERLY, Iowa - After struggling in the first set, the Grinnell College volleyball team battled back and went toe-to-toe with Wartburg College - a team receiving votes for the national rankings - Tuesday night.

Wartburg (10-6) won the opening set 25-15 before the Pioneers took the Knights to the limit in the second set, a 29-27 marathon. The hosts pulled away to take the final set, as well, 25-19.

Jenna Keller '24 led Grinnell at the net with 14 kills while hitting .281. Emily Brewer '24 added 20 assists and Sophie Weber '25 tallied three aces. Malaina Miles '25 put up a strong block with four, including three solos. Payton Lowrey '23 and Brewer added 14 and 11 digs, respectively.

A 9-2 run in the first set gave the Knights the victory and they led the second set 4-1, only to see Grinnell rally and take the lead. The Pioneers were at set point three times, 24-22, 25-24 and 26-25, before Wartburg closed out the win.

In the third set, Grinnell rallied from a three-point deficit with a six-point run for an 11-8 lead. Keller and Nicole Mlynski '26 each had kills during the spurt. It was later 15-all when Wartburg opened things up with a seven-point run on its way to victory.

Grinnell jumps back into Midwest Conference play Friday when Beloit College visits Darby Gymnasium. Match time is 7 p.m.
