Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Late Grinnell run doesn't hold up as Knox escapes with basketball win

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College made a valiant comeback, but Knox College responded to secure a 101-95 men's basketball victory Wednesday night.

The Pioneers trailed by nine points with 7:26 remaining in the game, but used a 14-4 run to take the lead. Mitch Priest '25 began the surge with a 3-pointer and David Bluder '25 added another to trim the gap to 85-82.

After two jumpers by Knox, Dean Mazlish '23 hit a jumper and a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game. Bluder then blocked a shot and helped his own cause with a trey, putting the Pioneers on top 90-89 with 4:07 left.

Grinnell (6-12, 2-8 Midwest Conference) went cold from there, missing its next four shots and turning the ball over while Knox tallied nine unanswered points for a 98-90 lead with 1:15 left. Mazlish followed with a 3-pointer, but it was too little too late as Knox (5-13, 3-6 MWC) sewed up the win.

Grinnell was in great shape early on, breaking out to a 16-7 lead before the Prairie Fire gradually rallied and went into halftime with a 52-46 edge.

Bluder led the Pioneers with 17 points, Mazlish had 13, Moze Thurmgreene '23 tallied 12 and Aiden Gilbert '23 sored 11. Brady Vest '23 had seven rebounds and Zach Rosen '26 a career-best six. Vest dished out five assists, a career-high, as did Rosen. In the steals department, Priest had a career-high three.

Grinnell returns to Darby Gymnasium Saturday when MWC leader Illinois College visits for a 5 p.m. game.
