Grinnell women get out to great start before Knox rallies to stay perfect in MWC

GALESBURG, Ill. - For the first quarter-plus, it looked like Grinnell College would be the team to knock Knox College from the unbeaten ranks of the Midwest Conference women's basketball standings.

The Pioneers opened up a 19-14 lead two minutes into the second frame, but the host Prairie Fire answered with a 21-1 run the rest of the period on its way to a 63-51 victory Wednesday night.

While Grinnell struggled from the field, hitting just 28.8 percent of its shots, the Pioneers made 83.3 percent of their free throws which ranks second for the team this season.

The Pioneers burst out to a 3-0 lead right off the bat on a 3-pointer by Erin Lillis '24. After Knox rallied for a 14-13 lead, Grinnell (7-10, 4-6 MWC) caught fire in the final minute of the period as Aiyana Rockwell '24 made a jumper and Eva Carchidi '24 tacked on two free throws to give Grinnell a 17-14 lead.

Lillis nailed a jumper two minutes into the second period to give Grinnell a 19-14 edge before the Prairie Fire came back to lead 35-20 at halftime.

Knox (14-4, 9-0 MWC) opened its lead up to 53-31 by the end of three periods and maintained that edge before Grinnell made a furious rally. Annabel Dougherty '25 began the run with a jumper, Kelsey Ericksen '26 drained a 3-pointer and Lillis made a jumper and trey to bring the Pioneers within 12 points at 59-47.

After the Prairie Fire answered with a four-point run, Grinnell scored four of its own to account for the final margin.

Lillis led Grinnell with 16 points, while P.K. Hall '25 grabbed eight boards and Lillis six. Rockwell contributed a career-high three assists as well as two steals.

Grinnell has a key MWC test Saturday when Illinois College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 3 p.m. game.
